GHC's Travel + Connect Program in Kenya

Enhancing Rotary Global Grant Writing Through Project Site Visits in Kenya

There are many ongoing Global Grants that illustrate successful approaches in each of the Rotary International Foundation Key areas:

  1. Disease prevention and treatment (e.g., Malaria project)
  2. Water, sanitation and hygiene (e.g., GHC CHECs)
  3. Maternal and child health (e.g., Project HEART)
  4. Basic education and literacy (e.g., Maasai Village)
  5. Community economic development (e.g., GHC CHECs)
  6. Environment (e.g., Sasa Harambee Project; Maasai Mara safari)
  7. Conflict and peace (e.g., UN tour)

Learn key lessons in how to set up a successful RI Global Grant project

Besides seeing these projects, Rotarians will learn key lessons in how to approach setting up a successful RI Global Grant project.  These lessons include:

  • Understanding the local and national context (culture, language, history)
  • Finding and working with good Rotary partners
  • Keys to success:  trust and communication with those working at the site
  • Managing budgeting and avoiding difficult issues
  • Measurement and evaluation of impact (proof of concept)
  • Visibility, marketing and scaling up a successful intervention model
  • Experiencing a Maasai Mara safari (environment/biodiversity)

Education will be led by Dr. Blair Gifford, Center for Global Health at the University of Colorado Medical Center.

Dr. Gifford is a New Century Fellow (Fulbright), and a Paul Harris Society member (Rotary).
