Nyanturago is GHC's 11th CHEC community, a village of about 1,200 in Kisii County, 37 km southeast of Kisii town. Baseline surveys in October 2022 covered 120 households; health training started in January 2023. Turnout was low at first, then grew as members started seeing results in their own homes. Kitchen gardens were the standout success of the health curriculum — by graduation in late May 2023, most members had healthy, producing gardens. All 70 graduates continued into economic training.
Nyanturago's CHEC is largely made up of older women. They chose projects that match their capacity, with table banking at the center rather than physically demanding farming. That's a deliberate fit, and it works.
As of January 1, 2026, the CHEC had raised 122,000 KSH across table banking and beekeeping combined. The apiary produced its first meaningful harvest in May: 22 liters from 4 hives, out of 32 currently colonized.
Nyanturago's 40-hive apiary has been running since late 2023. As of the May 2026 inspection, 32 hives are colonized. First harvest: 22 liters from 4 hives. For more on the apiary, visit greenerhillshoney.org/nyanturago
Table banking is the primary economic engine here. The group has collectively raised 122,000 KSH, and the system keeps running. For a CHEC built around what older women can realistically sustain, it's exactly the right choice.
